Tornado in mississippi

A powerful tornado nearly 1.6 miles large advanced on Saturday through central Mississippi, getting 10 peoples lives, including three children, and leaving dozens injured, state officials said. The tornado hit at least 13 counties, destroying dozens of homes and trapping residents in the interior, damaging businesses, blocking roads and cutting power to thousands of people, said Emergency Management Agency of Mississippi.

Five people died in Choctaw County, four in the case of the Yazoo city and Holmes, said Greg Flynn. Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour declared a state of emergency after the tornado in Mississippi is the first major tornado of the year.

“It caused severe damage around Yazoo City,” Barbour told CBS television, who grew up in the city. ”We have fatalities, a number of people we are still trying to rescue, who are trapped in buildings. It’s a big tornado and caused severe damage and perhaps victims north of here,” Barbour said.

The emergency agency said that “the Sheriff’s Department Hinds County is sending two dozen commissioners and 100 prisoners to attend the Yazoo County response and clean up debris.”

The storm system has moved over Tennessee, Alabama and Kentucky, said Greg Carbine, spokesman for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Meanwhile, spokesman of the Governor of Mississippi And Turner says, Governor Haley Barbour reportedly survived despite being around the disaster areas in Yazoo City. According to Governor Barbour, twister “giant” destroyed hundreds of homes to the ground and cause some places wider than ever. Hundreds of residents estimated to remain trapped inside the badly damaged house.

Rescue team, Turner added, directly derived at least in three districts who reportedly suffered considerable damage. In other places the local Fire Chief, Roy Wilson, reporting at least 20 to 30 homes were destroyed and 27 people taken to hospital University of Mississippi in Jackson.

Four victims were flown by helicopter from hard-hit Yazoo City to the University of Mississippi Medical Centre in Jackson, while the American Medical Response service transported 17 others by ambulance to area hospitals, said AMR spokesman Jim Pollard.

Emergency response teams set up two shelters to house storm victims in Vicksburg and Yazoo City.

The powerful tornado that blasted through Yazoo City was nearly a mile wide with winds of up to 150 miles per hour, according to meteorologists.

“It reminds me of (Hurricane) Katrina,” a teary-eyed Mr Barbour said of the damage in his native Yazoo City.

Rescue operations in other parts of the state were dispatching ambulances to affected areas, while the emergency management agency in Rankin County sent a bus converted to a multi-patient ambulance.

“The patients had a range of injuries from minor to severe. In any tornado, any part of the body is vulnerable or susceptible to a large variety of injuries,” Pollard said, noting that other “walking wounded” patients were treated on site.

Mr Barbour was in Yazoo City, his home town, when the tornado struck.

The storms cut over a large swath of the country, with areas in Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, Georgia, Ohio, Illinois and Indiana were placed under tornado watches and warnings as severe thunderstorms swept over the region.

The National Weather Service Storm Prediction Centre “is forecasting the development of a few strong, long-track tornadoes over parts of the mid-south, central Gulf Coast states and Tennessee Valley this afternoon and evening,” it said in a statement. “This is a particularly dangerous situation.”
